Hiking in Badger

These are pictures taken by a family who went out for a hike in the Badger hills just South East of
West Richland. They were rock hunting and picnicing and enjoying a spring
day last weekend.

This was in southeastern Washington State.

Signs and Wonders for today??

In studying Hebrews 2:1-4 I read this from W. Wiersbe, Be Confident his study of Hebrews.

Wiersbe writes -

I have often told the story about the pastor who preached a series of sermons on “the sins of the saints.” He was severely reprimanded by one of the members of the church. ”After all,” said the member, “sin in the life of a Christian is different from sin in the lives of other people.”

“Yes,” replied the pastor “it’s worse!”

We have the idea that believers today “under grace” can escape the chastening hand of God that was so evident “under Law.” But to whom much is given, much shall be required. Not only have we received the Word from the Son of God, but that Word has been confirmed by apostolic miracles (2:4). The phrase “signs and wonders” is found 11 times in the NT. Here it refers to the miracles that witnessed to the Word and gave confirmation that it was true. These miracles were performed by the apostles. (see Mark 16:17-20; Acts 2:43). Today we have the completed Word of God; so there is no need for these apostolic miracles. God now bears witness through His Spirit using the Word (Rom. 8:16; 1 John 5:1-13). The Spirit also gifts to God’s people so that they may minister in the church (Eph. 4:11; 1 Cor. 12)

Signs and wonders for today? NO.

Child Spanking Debate

Most of America 's populace think it improper to spank children.

The other day I was talking to a fellow worker about methods used to discipline children.



We talked about 'time outs', grounding, holding back 'rewards' until the child displayed desired behavior etc. One of the things we discussed was the act of spanking and my friend explained that no, he does not spank any of his children.



He explained that what he does is to take the misbehaving child out for a ride in the car and talk. He said that usually this works and that the child calms down fairly quickly and really doesn't take too much time.



By removing the child, in this case his son, from the immediate situation and providing a change of scenery, the child is allowed to focus on something different. Once the child has the opportunity to change perspective, things get better quickly and the child has better understanding of his place within the family and begins to understand the family’s concept of acceptable behavior.

A well known Sociologist wrote, "the most dangerous place in our society is the home."

- 8 million assaulted by members of own families.
- More policemen killed each year in family disputes than any other line of duty.

- In 4, the wife is seriously beaten by husband.
- In 3, children are kicked, bitten, or punched.

1. A HOME SHOULD BE SET UP ON BIBLICAL GROUNDS.

- Only believers should get married. (DAVE & PEGGY)
- Love does not justify marriage.
- Pregnancy does not justify marriage.
- Family traditions are not always biblical.
- Social planners are not usually biblical.
- The "RIGHTS" crowd make poor risks.
- Divorced people are high risk and unscriptural.


2. THE HOLY SPIRIT SHOULD BE GIVEN HIS PROPER PLACE.

- Unseen guest at every meal.
- Spirit filled man and woman will be ideally happy.


3. THE HOME SHOULD BE BUILT AROUND THE LOCAL CHURCH & SCHOOL

- Preacher who said he wanted to find a good church & move there, get job & build around church schedule.
- Consider services appointments with God, like doctor.
- Place of worship, learning, service, social, etc.


4. THE WORLD MUST BE KEPT OUT.

- The world Fascinates - then Assinates
- The world Thrills - then Kills
- The world Delights - then Blights
- The world Pays - then Enslaves

The world is an enemy of character. Those without character become feeling oriented.
During the last 20-30 years we've had a strong drift toward feeling & experience religion. THE REASONS:
1. Television influence.
2. Rock Music.
3. Humanistic Influence.
To offset these influences & minimize this intrusion.
- Cut T.V. Watching down or out.
- Provide stories, books, readers, that teach character.
- Use slogans. "Do Right", "Quitters never win", "Pray Without Ceasing", etc.
- Set a positive example.
- Projects of action: Paper route, Lawn cutting, chores, trips, fishing, camping, etc.
- Emphasis on accountability. Must keep books on allowance and spending, report on dates. (Debbie)


5. GIVE DAD HIS PLACE IN THE HOME.

- He is God's High Priest & accountable to God.
- Not a dictatior but a leader. (great difference)
- He must set up guidelines. (give freedom within)
- He must assume authority. (someone will)
- Delegate responsibility. (involve everybody) use-lose
- Supervise. (T. Dollar-control) Not what we expect-inspect
- Build his ego, never tear down. (food & love)


6. GIVE MOM HER PLACE IN THE HOME.

- She needs security. (especially at mid life.) (When she starts caulking instead of powering)
- She has a homemaker and mothering instinct.
- Needs to feel loved. (Ky-She ain't got no mule)


- SEVEN THINGS WOMEN SAID MADE THEM FEEL LOVED:

1. Understanding and sympathy.
2. Thoughtfulness in little (flowers, candy, birthday)
3. Verbal reassurance.
4. Physical attention - Kiss bye & Hello.
5. Positive attitude.
6. Feeling needed.
7. Assurance that he's right with God.


HER TOOLS:
1. Scheduling. (If you want supper it will be a 6:00)
2. Spending. Keep him off balance with credit cards. (Playing Teddy Roosevelt - CHARGE)
3. Sex. Powerful tool
4. Sickness. Backache, Headache, teeth itch.
5. Sobbing. Most powerful one,Man feel guilty,helpless.
6. Spirituality - Many women get ahead, & use it as tool
7. Silence. "Tell your father, I'm not speaking to him.
8. Suicide or Divorce threat. (95 yr. old)


7. GIVE THE CHILDREN A GOOD PLACE IN THE HOME.

- If lawn is to be attractive - It needs attention.
- If house is to look nice - It needs attention.
- If car is to look good - It needs attention.
- If kids are to turn out - they need attention.
- There must be discipline and training.
- Instill in them automatic understandings. (TTU)
- Set example for kids.(Have their respect)
- Will of parent must prevail over the child.
- Don't speak 7 times (Last time I'll say last time)
- Never, Never spontaneous smack or spank. (Go to bed and wait.)
- MOMMY, there's a peach growing on the peach tree.
- Rice: "Wait 3 weeks on girls, start on boys right away"
- Don't want to clone them but cultivate them.
- Teach them to be God controlled, not feeling controlled.

Preface

I have written a book; not for the student of classic lore, but for the young, to whom plain truths are of more value than polished style. Should it serve the cause of truth, I shall be content for critics to exercise their talents upon its imperfections. The object of the book is to give a plain, common sense view of the doctrines of the gospel, and to present, in a simple style, the peculiar features distinguishing Baptists from all other Christian denominations. I have no designs against the Presbyterians, as such, but select them only as representatives of the great Pedo-Baptist family. The expressions that Dr. Farnsworth is made to use, are generally the stereotyped sentences used by Methodist and Presbyterian controversialists with whom I am acquainted. The trial and expulsion of Mrs. Brown from the church, is introduced merely to form a basis from which to present the Communion question in its true light, and not with a view to show intolerance in the Presbyterian church.

With whatever imperfections this book may have, and with a just feeling of responsibility for the result of its teachings, I send it forth, attended by a fervent prayer that it may be instrumental in the acomplishment of much good.

Preface To New Edition

When the plates of this wonderful book became so worn by the issue of over 100,000 copies that the making of new plates was necessary, it was deemed best to have the book carefully edited. I have, therefore, gone over it and have eliminated some defects and some superfluities of expression, but in no case has the sense been changed. The aim has been to make it plainer.

I have added the statement of the offer of $1,000 reward for the production of single passage in the Greek of either the classic or the New Testament period where baptizo means sprinkle or pour, and have given some testimonies of leading scholars of different denominations.

It is confidently hoped that this great little book, whose author builded even better than he knew, will enter upon a greater sphere of usefulness than ever. It has already led its thousands to New Testament truth and practice, - may it continue to lead its tens of thousands.

Baptists are a people. They have a historical identity. They have a historical image. Their continuity is the longest of any Christian group on earth. Their doctrines, principles, and practices are rooted in the apostolic age. I am not a Pharasaical sectarian but I don't confuse Baptists with the Reformers. The Reformers wanted to reform the Roman Catholic Church; the Baptists were against the church, because it was not a New Testament church.


Protestantism originated in the Reformation. Protestantism is "protestism." That's a Negative. Negativism has within it the seed of its own disintegration. The Baptists were not reformers. They were not protesters. They were positive.


Freedom of conscience is not a Reformation doctrine; it is a Baptist doctrine.

Religious liberty is not a Reformation doctrine; it is a Baptist doctrine.

Believer's baptism is not a Reformation doctrine; it is a Baptist doctrine.

Baptism of the believer by immersion in water, symbolizing the believer's death, burial and resurrection with Christ is not a Reformation doctrine; it is a Baptist doctrine.

The local, visible, autonomous assembly, with Christ as its only head and the Bible as its sole rule of faith and practice, is not a Reformation doctrine; it is a Baptist doctrine.

Worldwide missions are not a Reformation doctrine; it is a Baptist doctrine. The Reformers had no missionary vision and no missionary spirit. For almost two hundred years after the Reformers, the Reformation churches felt no burden to implement the Great Commission.


What kind of world would the Western world have been had Protestantism became its master? Who but the Baptist kept Protestantism from becoming master? The general attitude today is that the truth is determined by the passing of time; that there aren't eternal, abiding truths. "You can't turn the clock back. Time invalidates all truth. Time invalidates one set of truth and fastens another set upon us." Baptist history repudiates this philosophy of fatalism. Baptists today are believing, teaching, preaching and practicing the truths that they believed, taught, preached and practiced two thousand years ago. It gives me a feeling of stability to reflect that I, as a Baptist, am in the stream of this long continuity of faith and practice. The Baptist people are a great continuity ... a great essence ... a great dignity. The world never needed them more than it needs them today.
