LEADERSHIP by Dr. Roy Harris

Why do pastors struggle with this?

Two areas of scripture will be looked at in this article, but lets first look at some important thought:

1- Why do many pastors fear the idea of building a strong leadership team?

2- Why do they choose the people in the church that have the least potential for leadership?

What is it that God tells us about this most important issue:

Acts 6:2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

Men that believe God and Gods Word will not fear men, their job, or their next paycheck. They will build their ministry on precepts given by their Lord. The problem starts with the last qualifications found in vs 3.

1- Powerful men- Full of the Holy Ghost. Men that lots of pastors are afraid of.

2- Oh but it gets worse- Intelligent and able men. Full of wisdom.

3- Then it gets bad- Men whom we may appoint over this business. Men that lead other men.
Every successful man in the ministry looks for men more qualified than they. I have said on many pages of this website and the Regions Beyond paper that most pastors lead followers, but successful pastors lead leaders.

Men that only lead followers are not leaders, they are managers.
When leadership is constantly recruiting and training leaders the church will never plateau. Anytime a church plateaus or stagnates it is the fault of the guy called Pastor. He is not doing his number one job, building leaders.

I like it! It reminds me of Elijah and Elisha. Elisha asked for 2x the power, and Elijah agreed. May God send me men with 10X God's spirit.
