EVENING DEVOTION by James Smith
JULY 12
Isaiah 8:14
And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone
of
stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the
houses
of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the
inhabitants of Jerusalem.
That is, the Lord Jesus shall, for of him the
Prophet speaks.
He is the sanctuary in which we are safe from the
wrath of God, the curse of a broken law, and the evil designs of Satan.
This is our refuge to which we must repair from
enemies, storms, and troubles.
Here we can worship God on a throne of grace with
confidence, faith, and acceptance.
And by him God will manifest himself, and impart
instruction on all matters of importance.
In this sanctuary we may expect a supply of all
our wants—deliverance from all our fears—defence from all our foes—help in all
our troubles—the sanctification of all our sorrows—and safety while we continue
below.
Reader, you should fly to Jesus in every trouble.
You should expect from him whatever you really
need.
He shows you how gracious God is to you, and sets
forth the blessedness of all true believers.
Is he your sanctuary?
Have you ever met God in Christ?
Do you worship God in Christ?
Do you look for all you want in Christ?
If he is your sanctuary, seek to glorify him.
Expect to find every blessing in him.
In every difficulty and danger repair to him, and
praise the Lord for such a glorious dwelling.
In Christ I every glory view,
Of safety, strength, and beauty too;
Beloved Saviour! Ever be
A sanctuary for me.
James Smith
