EVENING DEVOTION by James Smith
JULY 4
Psalm 63:3
Because thy lovingkindness is better than life,
my lips shall praise thee.
Gideon’s soldiers were in a painful situation,
they were faint.
Yet they were the Lord’s selected host, and they
were steadily following their Captain.
But from their exertions, their conquests, and
the want of food, they were faint.
They were faint near the Jordan, where God had
done such great things for their forefathers, and just as their victory was
being completed.
All this is true of the Lord’s people now.
Though the Lord’s beloved ones, though the
soldiers of the cross, from the burdens they have to bear, from the trials that
have to endure, from the conflicts they are engaged in, and from the want of
sufficiently feeding on spiritual provisions, they often feel very faint,
dejected, and dispirited.
Still these men were pursuing.
They did not give up, nor give way to the carnal
reason, which may have suggested-”If God were with us, he would supply us, or
not allow is to feel thus faint.”
They pursued their vanquished foes, in obedience
to God’s commands, and as encouraged by the promise.
Brethren, let us imitate these worthy men.
Do you feel faint?
Does it appear in prayer?-in labour?
Still pursue.
Pursue, because God is with you.
Wrestle on in prayer unceasing,
‘Till you see the foe destroy’d
Bless’d with all the victor’s blessing,
Crown’s with all the life of God.
James Smith
