LOOK THOU UPON ME

EVENING DEVOTION by James Smith

JULY 11

Psalm 119:132
Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me,
as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name.

Here is a child seeking a father’s notice.

—Whatever God does, he does with ease.

A look is enough, to relieve us in our deepest distress,
   to rescue using our greatest difficulties, and
      to fill us with peace and joy.

The Lord’s look, will discover and detect us, if we are wrong;
   it will confirm and establish us, if we are right.

—His look humbles Job,
  strengthened Gideon,
  brought Peter to repentance, and
  filled dying Stephen with joy and peace.

To look upon us, is to show us favour.

“To this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit,
  and tremebleth at my word.”

If we would have God look down upon us, we must look up unto him.

If we would have him look upon us, and be gracious unto us;
  we must look unto him in prayer and with faith.

Beloved, are you desiring that the eye of God should rest upon you?

That you may realize this fact?

If he looks upon you in mercy,
  his look will dissipate your fears,
    disperse you darkness, and
       fill you with light and holy confidence.

Is it too much to ask?

It is not much for God to give, but it is much for us to receive.

It betokens reconciliation.

It evidences interest in us. It imparts blessings.

O look upon thy servant, Lord,
And pardon, peace, and joy afford;
May I with thy sweet presence blest,
This night enjoy refreshing rest!

James Smith
