EVENING DEVOTION by James Smith
JULY 5
Judges 8:4
And Gideon came to Jordan, and
passed over, he, and three hundred men that
were with him, faint,
yet pursuing them.
Gideon’s soldiers were in a painful situation,
they were faint.
Yet they were the Lord’s selected host, and they
were steadily following their Capitan.
But from their exertions, the conquests, and the
want of food, they were faint.
They were faint near the Jordan where God had
done such great things for their forefathers, and just as their victory was
being completed.
All this is true of the Lord’s people now.
Though the Lord’s beloved ones, though the
soldiers of the cross from the burdens they have to bear, from the trials they
have to endure, from the conflicts they are engaged in , and from the want
sufficiently feeding on spiritual provisions, they often feel very faint,
dejected, and dispirited.
Still these men were pursuing.
They pursued their vanquished foes, in obedience
to God’s commands, and as encouraged by the promise.
Brethren, let us imitate these worthy men.
Do you feel faint?
Does it appear in prayer?—in labour?
Still pursue.
Pursue, because God is with you.
Wrestle, on in prayer unceasing,
‘Till you see the foe destroy’d,
Bless’d with all the victory blessing,
Crown’d with all the life of God.
