EVENING DEVOTION by James Smith
MARCH 6
Romans 8:1
There
is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in
Christ Jesus,
who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Every believer is in Christ: united to his
person, interested in his offices, clothed with his righteousness, and sanctified
by his Spirit:
“there is therefore now no condemnation.”
Doubts may be. Fears may harass.
Sin there is in us, but no sin is imputed to us.
The believer is under no charge.
By virtue of oneness with Christ, he has been
acquitted from every charge, he stands justified from all things, his is
accepted of God as a beloved child, and is entitled to all the provisions of
grace and glory. If he sins, he is chastened; being chastened, he confesses his
sins, God in his faithfulness and justice forgives; he is led afresh to claim
and plead the finished work of Jesus, and finds that he is not condemned, but
acquitted.
No one can lay any thing to his charge, for God
justifies him; he does so, because Christ died for him; yea, rather, because as
his Surety he is risen again, and is now at his own right hand as his Advocate,
ever living to make intercession for him.
Blessed state!
Unspeakable privilege.
No condemnation, O my soul,
‘Tis God that speaks the word;
Perfect in comeliness art thou
In Christ, thy glorious Lord.
James Smith
