I HAVE LOVE YOU,

EVENING DEVOTION by James Smith

AUGUST 11

John 13:34
A new commandment I give unto you,
That ye love one another; as I have loved you,
that ye also love one another.

The love of Christ is an inexhaustible subject.

It is full of sweetness.

He loved us before we knew him, and he manifested his love by preferring our nature to angels, by making a full and sufficient atonement for our sins, by conquering all our spiritual foes, by going to heaven as our Forerunner, by sending down the Holy Spirit, by acting as our Advocate and Intercessor, and by sympathising with us.

He has displayed his love in his dealings with it.

He found us enemies to God, and he reconciled us.

He bore with us when under conviction of sin.

He only chastens, when he might justly punish us.

He restores us from all our wanderings.

He carries on his word, and supplies all our needs.

He rejoices to save us, though great sinners.

He does every thing that is necessary for us, and does all cheerfully.

His love is displayed in what he intends to do.

He will come and fetch us as our Bridegroom.

He will separate us from all sinners.

He will clothe us with glory.

He will publicly marry us.

He will exalt us to his throne.

He will bring us to reign where we served, to rejoice where we suffered, and to shine where we were put to shame.

Lord, in thy love I yet behold
And undiminished store,
A depth unmeasured and untold,
A sea without a shore.

James Smith
