EVENING DEVOTION by James Smith
AUGUST 6
Psalm 62:5
My soul, wait thou only upon God;
for my expectation is from him.
What does waiting upon God suppose? Dependence.
It is the posture of a subject—a servant—a child.
Promise.
Many things are promised to us.
Indeed all good things. But we must believe—feel
our need—seek for the blessings. Wait upon God’s time.
Hope.
It is expectation that brings us to God, and is
the spring of all spiritual action.
Desire.
Unless I desire to receive from God, I shall not
look to God, nor shall I wait upon God.
Obedience.
We are commanded to wait upon the Lord, and the
neglect of this duty is sin. What does waiting upon God include?
It includes faith in his word. Supplication at
his throne. Attendance upon his ordinances. Habitual looking out for answers to
prayer, and the interference of God on our behalf. Eyeing God in all places,
and in all things. Acknowledging him as the source and giver of all good
things.
Let us glance at the injunction. “Wait thou upon
only God.”
Then and only then are you
safe—holy—wealthy—content—thriving—happy. Wait on the Lord for all you need, in
all you do, and especially when perplexed and troubled. The waiting soul is
sure of the blessing.
With humble faith I wait,
To see thy face again;
Of Israel it shall ne’er be said,
He sought the Lord in vain.
James Smith
