EVENING DEVOTION
The world without Christ is in a state of
darkness.
In the darkness of ignorance—crime—cruelty—and
degradation.
The Jews had a golden stand with its seven lamps,
but it was confined to their tabernacle or temple.
But Jesus is come a luminary into the world, a
light to enlighten the gentiles, and the glory of his people Israel.
He is the source of knowledge—comfort—beauty—, or
holiness—and safety.
In him there is a fulness of light.
Like the light of the sun it is free: and it
abideth for ever.
He shines on the world by his word, he shines
into the heart by his Spirit.
His light attracts sinners to his feet, and in
his light they see light.
They are by him delivered from moral darkness, or
guilt: from mental darkness, or ignorance: from legal darkness, or the hiding
of the Lord’s countenance: and from eternal darkness, or banishment from God
forever.
Following him they have the living light, by
which they discover their path—escape the snares of the fowler—enjoy the
scenery—discern the object—and rejoice in their privileges.
Reader, are you enlightened by Jesus?
If you are not, go to him for light.
James Smith
OCTOBER 12
John 8:12
…I am the light of the world:
Light of my soul! thyself reveal;
Thy power and presence let me fell;
And know, and see the wondrous things
Concealed from prophets, priests, and kings.
