EVENING DEVOTION
What was finished?
The prophecies and predictions, which referred to
his humiliations, sufferings, and death.
The object and design of the ceremonial law.
The sufferings of Christ were finished.
His work below was finished.
The debts of his people were paid.
The price of their redemption was found.
The righteousness by which they are to be
justified was wrought out.
All the demands of the law were met.
The rights of justice were acknowledged and
rendered.
Satan was defeated and spoiled.
Sin was for ever put away.
The curse had been endured and was now removed.
The flock was purchased by the Shepherd’s blood.
The foundation of peace, joy, and everlasting
salvation was laid.
The fountain to cleanse from all sin was opened.
Death was abolished, and everlasting life was
about to burst upon our world in all its glory.
In a word, the Saviour had finished the work
which the Father give him to do—he had redeemed his pledge, which he gave in
the covenant of peace—he had ransomed his beloved bride—he had harmonized all
the divine perfections in man’s salvation, he had glorified the Father on
earth, and manifested his name there.
James Smith
OCTOBER 14
John 19:30
…It is finished:
‘Tis finished—the Messiah dies
For sins, but not his own;
The great redemption is complete,
And Satan’s power o’er thrown.
