EVENING DEVOTION by James Smith
APRIL 13
Luke 10:20
Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the
spirits
are subject unto you; but rather rejoice,
because your names are written in heaven.
What an unspeakable blessing is this.
To be
registered among the family of God.
To have
a name in the Lamb’s book of life.
To be written among the living in Jerusalem.
Election is the earliest effect of grace.
We were chosen in Christ.
Chosen to holiness.
Chosen to eternal life.
Our persons were given to Jesus.
Our salvation was entrusted to his hands.
Our interests were made his care.
Our names were recorded in the register of his
members, and
we are
called upon by him to rejoice in the fact.
God has thought of us.
He has thought of us in love.
He has ordained us to eternal life.
He has made a full provision for all our wants in
the covenant.
He has given us exceeding great and precious
promises.
He has proved his exceeding kindness towards us
in a thousand ways.
Let us so record his mercies as they shall never
be forgotten.
Let us make holiness the business of our life.
For no one can know his election but by its
results, of which holiness is the principal.
If we are not holy, we have no proof whatever
that our names are not in the book of life.
Thus did eternal love begin
To raise us up from death and sin;
Our characters were then decreed,
Blameless in love, a holy seed,
James Smith
