EVENING DEVOTION
We have required help, for as creatures we are
exposed, weak, and foolish; and
NOVEMBER 19
1Samuel 7:12
Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped
us.
as Christians we are surrounded by snares,
opposed by enemies,
are timid and fearful, and
easily turned aside.
We have
received help, and help in every time of need.
It was through divine assistance that we were
able to overcome unbelief and evil habits;
to take up our cross and bear it
after Jesus;
to stand our ground amidst storms of temptation, and powerful
opposition’
to persevere in the good old way.
Having obtained help of God we continue to this
day.
Let us then set up our Ebenezer, and acknowledge
the help we have received.
Its source was divine, it came from above.
The supply had been sufficient—exactly suited to
the circumstances
in which we are placed.
The manner of communication was at
times direct, we can say,
“The Lord helped me:” at other times indirect, the Lord
helped us by others.
What should be the result?
Praise—hearty, grateful, constant praise.
Prayer—fervent, faithful, frequent prayer for
help in future.
Patience—giving the Lord time, and waiting in
quiet expectation for the fulfilment of his word.
Testimony—God is faithful.
James Smith
Here I raise my Ebenezer,
Hither by thy help I come;
And I hope, by the good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
