MY GOD SHALL BE MY STRENGTH

EVENING DEVOTION

NOVEMBER 4

Isaiah 49:5
…my God shall be my strength.

This was the language of Jesus, our living Head, and bright example.

He lived by faith on the Father’s word.

He was deeply tried by his Father’s enemies.

But he lived by the Father, and we should live by him.

We are love with the same love
  —interested in the same covenant
—and entitled to the same promises.

Let us in trials, severe conflicts, distressing changes, and the approaches of the last enemy,
say, “My God shall be my strength;” for he has said, “I will strengthen thee;” and
when we feel weakest let faith be strongest, for he says,
“My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

God has been our strength, and it is having obtained help of him,
  that we continue unto this day;
let us therefore trust him for the future, and say in reference to every duty, and
when about to engage with any foe,
“I will go in the strength of the Lord,
I will make mention of his righteousness, even of his only.”

If God is my strength, then I shall overcome—
  I shall persevere—
I shall arrive safe at home—
I shall praise his sovereign grace for evermore.

Let us lie down to-night rejoicing in our privilege, and exercising our thoughts upon this glorious fact, “My God is my strength.”

What if the springs of life were broke,
And flesh and heart should faint?
God is my soul’s eternal rock,
The strength of every saint.
