For Man Also Knoweth

Evening Devotion

DECEMBER 16

For man also knoweth not his time:
Ecclesiastes 9:12

All the future is unknown, a dark cloud hangs between us and it.

We know not what shall be.

We know not the time of trial,
when our graces, our strength, and
    resolution shall be tired.

We know not the time of temptation,
when Satan will be allowed more particularly to assault us,
and try his strength upon us.

We know not the tie of danger,
when there is but a step between us and a grievous fall,
when our foes stand ready to triumph over us.

We know not the time of our death,
  it is fixed,
it may be very near, but we are ignorant of it.

This should teach us humility,
let us not presume, but humbly wait upon God.

It should produce caution, let us not be high-minded, but fear.

It should stimulate to duty, let us work while it is day, the night cometh.

It should leaf to prayer, let us pray always will all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.

It should prevent carelessness, and self-confidence,
our foes are on the alert,
the snares are laid for our feet,
      the master is coming,
the hour of death may be just at hand.

Amidst a thousand snares I stand,
Upheld and guarded by thy hand,
Still let thy presence by my stay,
And guard me in this dangerous way.
