Evening Devotion
DECEMBER 18
… the holy people,
Isaiah 62:12
sets their hearts against sin, and
they give up the practice of sin.
They were chosen to be holy.
Jesus gave himself for them that they might be sanctified.
The
Holy Spirit takes possession of them,
in order to make them meet to be
partakers of the
inheritance of the saints in light.
Holiness becomes their element and delight.
They sigh for it, seek it, and endeavour to practice it.
They were once very impure, but they are washed,
they are
sanctified,
they are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus,
and by the Spirit
of their God.
Justification lies at the root of sanctification.
If the man is justified, he will be sanctified;
and it is only
by sanctification,
that he proves his justification.
In vain we talk of sin being pardoned, if it is not subdued.
The man who can live in sin is neither just not holy;
he gives
no evidence of interest in Jesus, or
that he is a partaker of the Holy Ghost.
All holy persons, discover their unholiness,
mourn over it,
pray to be delivered from it,
strive against it, and
long to be perfectly free
from all that defiles.
Such are the holy people, the redeemed of the Lord.
James Smith
Jehovah is a holy God;
Christ will alone the pure confess;
Angels are holy, and the road
To heaven, is that of holiness.
